Chapter Ten

Darric

This is what Zeus has been experiencing, I realized, laying on the bed beside Nicole. I watched her breaths rise and fall evenly as I traced the skin of her shoulder gently with my finger. There was no moon that night, but the blue darkness cast a strange halo over her body, giving her an almost supernatural glow. It had been a long time since I’d been this intimate with a woman to lay beside her and try to memorize the lines of her body.

I would never admit it aloud, but I was happy, euphoric. It wasn’t just the sex or the beautiful woman laying naked beside me. There was a connection here, a feeling like I belonged somewhere for once. I had something with Nicole, something strong and synched. It felt unbreakable, solidified in those moments.

Am I reading too much into this?

I didn’t think so. I had been thinking about Nicole nonstop for a week, catching wafts of her all over the base. If Connor had not been such an ass to her, I probably would have remained watching her from afar like some lovesick puppy.

I owe Connor a debt of gratitude for forcing my hand.

It was good to know that the attraction between us was not one-sided. I loathed to think what I would have done if I had learned Nicole had not wanted me as badly as I wanted her.

In those wee hours of the morning, as Nicole slept, and I watched her, I forgot about everything else. There was no base to think of or Slater, or the team. There was nothing else but me and Nicole. It was almost as if there had not been anything before, and there would be nothing after. I was living in the moment, and it was a heady sensation.

For the first time in longer than I could remember, I slept. My eyes closed despite my best intentions to stay awake and on guard. I wanted to stay there and soak up every second with Nicole, but inevitably, my exhaustion took hold, and I was out. There were no dreams that night, or if there were, they weren’t ones that I could recall. I wasn’t plagued by the horrible images of the bodies I’d left behind or the children I had displaced in the name of a greater good. There was nothing but a deep, restful slumber that I hadn’t felt in literal years.

For those few hours, I wasn’t myself. I was someone I didn’t recognize, and I’ll be damned if I didn’t like that guy better.

I woke before dawn as I always did, my internal clock waking me to army rules, but as my eyes opened, so did Nicole’s, almost as if she had sensed me. Her smile warmed my heart and wiped away any lingering uncertainty I might have had about us.

“Good morning,” she murmured. “How are you doing?”

“I was just going to ask you the same thing,” I replied, grinning. I leaned over to kiss her softly on the lips, and she returned my embrace eagerly.
